Van Gogh wrote to his brother that he saw ‘with a Japanese eye’. He was living in the South of France at the time. In this seascape, he used bold colours, strong contours, and a diagonal coastline – all compositional elements he took from Japanese prints. Japanese art helped him simplify and intensify his style.
