Tom Davis grew up on a small farm in Missouri and afterwards spent twenty-seven years in the Air Force, retiring as a colonel. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Professional Management and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Higher Education. Davis formulates his glaze colors and techniques. Iam inspired by the cultures of the 10 countries and 6 states I served in.
Raku is when pots are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot, they are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper easily. This starves the pot of oxygen, which gives the glaze a wonderful variety of colors. It’s an incredibly exciting technique, as there’s always the anticipation of how each piece may turn out with so many different variables.
